Digitalia MUNI ARTS Terms of Service
The faculty-level data infrastructure Digitalia MUNI ARTS is technically based on the Islandora system, which consists of several components:
Drupal is used to manage the repository content, store metadata and provide a friendly user interface.
The files themselves are stored in Fedora together with metadata dumps of content in Drupal. Fedora services include versioning and fixity checking.
Apache Solr is used for indexing content and searching the repository.
Islandora microservices provide synchronization of Drupal and Fedora content and integration of various image, video, and text processing applications.

Digitalia MUNI ARTS operates multiple separate highly customized instances of the Islandora system. Some are very narrowly specialized databses (e.g. Beauty Patterns), others have the ambition of being domain platforms used across multiple projects in that domain, such as ArchaeoData.

The system uses the infrastructure for running virtual servers at Masaryk University built on VMware technology located at the MU Institute of Computer Science. The operating system is Ubuntu LTS (as recommended by Islandora Community). Backups are performed regularly to a tape device on Bacula system managed at the MU Institute of Computer Science.
Digitalia MUNI ARTS is in the process of migrating from virtual servers to Kubernetes (K8s). As of July 2026, two pilot services are operated in K8s, ArchaeoVault (a NRP archaeology data repository) and Metasys, a meta catalog of Digitalia MUNI services. An image of each of Islandora's microservices is deployed to a separate pod within a designated namespace in the NRP K8s cluster operated by CESNET. The application requires root privilages upon initialization to run. Access to K8s and S3 resources for the applications are attached to e-INFRA Perun virtual organizations: VO_digitalia for Digitalia MUNI ARTS, VO_repo_archaeovault_prod for ArchaeoVault.
Beside files, all record types are also stored in Fedora. This happens automatically with each update of a record. NRP S3 compatible object store is used for persistence, items are saved in accordance with OCFL standard. This allows for recovery and migration to another system in case Islandora ceases to exist.
An AIP (archival information package) is currently the whole OCFL tree stored by Fedora, but finer control is planned in the future.
Content of databases is accessible to non-logged-in users as well. Such a user can browse individual records and files, apply filters and use search.
Users can log in via e-INFRA, detailed log in instructions are accessible here. e-INFRA AAI (also known as EOSC AAI) is the authentication and authorization infrastructure used by the National Repository Platform. It is integrated into the eduGAIN federation, so institutional login for Czech academic institutions as well as many libraries, foreign academic institutions, and some social identities, such as ORCID, Google or Apple ID are supported. e-INFRA is the sole source of user identities. Users must register with e-INFRA and then become a member of the Digitalia MUNI ARTS virtual organization in the e-INFRA instance of Perun. Upon registration to individual databases, users become members of the corresponding group in the Digitalia MUNI ARTS virtual organization. Registration is subject to approval by a digital curator and must be renewed once every 3 years. The services are connected using the Drupal OpenID Connect module, which communicates with Perun using the OIDC protocol (with slight changes in the form of patches).
Logged in users with the Content editor role have access to create and edit records.
Users can manage versions of objects. Changes in metadata of all record types are recorded in Drupal and versions of files are recorded in Fedora. Users with the Content editor role can view, compare, delete, or revert to a previous version of metadata of objects (called Revisions).
The repositories assign either handles or DOI to digital assets. The repository assigns persistent identifiers using the community contributed Drupal Persistent Identifiers Module. The Czech National DOI Center provides DOI registration services to the repository thanks to its institutional backing from Masaryk University, who is a member.

All services expose an OAI-PMH endpoint at /oai. For example, records in Dublin Core can be accessed via /oai/request?verb=ListRecords&metadataPrefix=oai_dc. Record are aggregated to LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ. Records from Metasys and ArchaeoVault are to be aggregated to the National Metadata Directory via CCMM /oai/request?verb=ListRecords&metadataPrefix=ccmm-xml.
The content of the repository is accessible via the REST API. The supported formats for the GET method are csv, json and jsonld.

The Matomo tool is deployed to track the usage of the site. The collected data is stored on a local server.
